The first project of the Whitingham Community Trust (WCT) is the preservation and revitalization of the historic Schoolhouse #2 and Masonic Lodge, transforming this historic building into a welcoming performance hall and community center where people gather, creativity flourishes, and new ideas can take root.
Built in 1850 as a school, the historic space has been part of the community for generations. In 1886, Leonard Brown described Schoolhouse #2 as, “the best school house in this part of the county.” The building was sold in 1901 to the Free & Accepted Masons for one dollar and operated as a Masonic Lodge until about 2016.
The building is now poised for its next chapter in the heart of Jacksonville: becoming a lively home for music, arts, education, entrepreneurship, and community gatherings.
With support from the Village Trust Initiative, WCT is moving this vision forward through planning, assessment, fundraising, and the renovation work to prepare this building for its next chapter.
